The Greatest Vinyl Mixes From the Golden Era of UK Dance Music

The greatest vinyl mixes from the golden era of UK dance music

The art of DJing has changed beyond recognition in the last decade. After the execution of the Criminal Justice Bill in 1994 shut down the rave scene overnight and pushed dance music away from the fields and into the nightclubs, the UK entered a heroic period of dance culture that inspired the world.

It was from this time through to the early 2000's that nightclubs became incubators for a cultural explosion, manifested in brand new, shocking sounds that literally shook the mainstream into service.

At this time DJ's met at record shops on Saturdays and bid for the latest dub plates on the stairs of countless thriving record shops across the country, then rushed home and worked late into the morning crafting their skill in bedrooms on 1210 Technics turntables, in front of a discerning crowd of stoned aficionados.

It was a golden time in UK music, the genres born and blended during this period are still the global authority today.

The skills required to be able to mix on direct drive turntables and critically to select the right track were essential in building a reputation, not to mention the commitment to carry your treasured records across cities and borders to share your love for music.

So we wanted to celebrate some of the best all vinyl mixes from this period and pay homage to the pioneers behind the turntables.

It's tough to pin down a Genre for many of these mixes, that's partly why they are timeless so it feels appropriate to keep it this way and let you discover them for yourself and in your own time.

Enjoy.
